Pune has reported 22 suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve disorder causing sudden muscle weakness and numbness. Civic authorities have launched a detailed probe and sent samples to ICMR-NIV for further testing.
Key Highlights:
1. Cases Detected:
22 suspected GBS cases identified across three to four hospitals in Pune.
Most patients are aged 12 to 30 years, with one case involving a 59-year-old patient currently undergoing treatment.
2. Condition Overview:
GBS is an immunological nerve disorder causing weakness in the limbs, often triggered by bacterial or viral infections.
Common triggers include influenza, rotavirus, dengue, and chikungunya viruses, as well as contaminated food and water.
3. Expert Insights:
Dr Nina Borade, Chief of the PMC Health Department:
"GBS is self-limiting and recoverable with supportive care like antibiotics, IV fluids, and treatment for paralysis."
"There’s no risk of epidemic or pandemic; the PMC is equipped to manage these cases.
Dr Sameer Jog, Consultant Intensivist:
"Of the 17 cases reported at my hospital, eight require ventilator support due to respiratory muscle weakness."
"The disorder occurs when the immune system, triggered by infections, attacks nerves and muscles." 4. Current Measures:
Samples from suspected patients sent to ICMR-NIV for testing.
PMC has constituted a committee of experts, including epidemiologists and scientists from NIV, to monitor and manage cases.
Civic officials emphasize the importance of maintaining food and water hygiene to prevent triggers.
Statements from Leaders or Officials:
Dr Nina Borade: "Reports of suspected GBS cases surfaced in the last two days. We have initiated a detailed probe and constituted an expert panel."
The PMC is conducting a detailed surveillance of patients and is prepared with medical resources to handle the situation. With prompt treatment, most GBS cases are recoverable. Public awareness of food and water hygiene is essential to prevent potential triggers.
