A major inter-state network supplying psychotropic drugs to Punjab has been exposed, with sources linking the supply chain to Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Dehradun. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has identified at least 44 companies operating illegally or unethically within this network.
Key highlights
Widespread network across states
The psychotropic drug supply originates from Baddi (Himachal), Gujarat, and Dehradun and reaches Punjab through unauthorized routes.
Several unlicensed factories and registered pharma companies have been identified as part of the supply chain.
Massive drug seizures
Since March 1, Punjab Police have seized over 25.7 lakh capsules and tablets classified as psychotropic substances.
Many of these drugs are being misused as narcotics, especially among youth and even inside prisons.
Officials and chemists involved
Medical officers, drug inspectors, and chemists have been arrested for their alleged role in facilitating or turning a blind eye to the illegal distribution.
Technical surveillance and joint operations are ongoing to dismantle the entire network.
ANTF surveillance and enforcement
ADGP Nilabh Kishore confirmed that 44 companies are under ANTF’s radar.
Some factories have already been shut down with help from respective state governments.
Rising abuse due to easy access
Psychotropic drugs are becoming popular due to their low cost and easy availability.
Despite legal provisions, many are sold without prescriptions, especially in rural and urban fringes.
Medical experts warn of serious mental health impacts on habitual users, particularly those already addicted to other substances.
The growing reach of psychotropic drug networks into Punjab highlights a dangerous trend of pharma-grade drug abuse. With enforcement agencies tracing links to multiple states and taking strict action, the focus is now on uprooting the ecosystem from supply to retail. The involvement of licensed companies and healthcare professionals raises further alarm about the scale and complexity of the issue.
