Police Crackdown on Illegal Sedative Injection Sale in Pune, One Arrested

Pune: A 26-year-old woman from Malwadi, Ambika alias Neha Anandsingh Thakur was arrested on Thursday for selling illegally 170 vials of injections of mephentermine sulphate, IP Termiva. The synthetic sympathomimetic agent prescribed for hypotension has been sold without prescription.

The raid at the house of Thakur in Hadapsar: Police recovered 120 vials of 30 ml injections and another 50 vials from a courier parcel.
Selling Price:
These vials sold at ₹334 in the medical stores were allegedly sold at ₹500 to the young buyers for recreational purposes and not for medicinal use.
Source of Drugs:
Thakur allegedly sourced the injections from an online marketplace. She allegedly came up with the idea of selling these drugs to friends and acquaintances for easy money.
Legal Process:
Arrest and Remand:
Thakur, who is a Standard IX dropout and is unemployed at present, was produced before a magistrate's court in Wanowrie. The court remanded her to custody till December 30 so that further investigation could be conducted about the source of the injections.
FDA Involvement:
Samples of the impounded injections were sent to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for testing. The officials confirmed that the drug is a stimulant similar to amphetamines and is often misused by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass. It is also known for its addictive properties.Police Statement:
Sub-Inspector Mahesh Kawale stated, “The accused placed orders on an online marketplace and sold the sedative injections to youngsters. Her operation was uncovered following a tip-off, and we are tracing the supply chain to identify further culprits.”Public Health Concern:
Authorities have warned against the abuse of mephentermine sulphate, which can be seriously hazardous to health if taken without medical advice. It is a synthetic sympathomimetic drug classified and typically prescribed for hypotension.The police are investigating the larger network responsible for the illegal supply of such drugs and collaborating with the FDA to take action against those responsible for supply.
