In a recent crackdown, the Shivajinagar police in Pune arrested two men for allegedly selling Mephentermine Sulphate injections illegally, a cardiac stimulant misused as a bodybuilding performance-enhancement drug.
Accused persons are Deepak Wadekar from Khadki and Sajan Jadhav from Sangli. The two were arrested during police patrolling. 14 injection vials, two syringes, and a car were confiscated from them.

Seizure Details:

  • The arrest occurred around 12:30 a.m. when Police Sub Inspector Ajeet Bade and his team were on routine patrol intercepting a suspicious car whose windows were black.

  • On inspection, they found the Mephentermine vials and syringes for which the duo had no prescriptions or bills.

Use of Mephentermine without Prescription:
Drug Inspector Vivek Khedkar said that Mephentermine is an antihypertensive drug, mainly used for hypotension. The drug is being misused by bodybuilders to increase the duration of workouts and gain muscles. Continued use may cause severe conditions like hypertension, skin rash, breathing problem, drowsiness, and insomnia.

Black Market Concerns:

  • The market price of a 10 ml vial of Mephentermine is Rs. 220, but through black marketing, it's sold for Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000.

  • Medical shops, distributors, gym trainers, and protein sellers often indulge in these black markets.

Legal Proceedings

  • An FIR was lodged against Wadekar and Jadhav under sections 278, 125, and 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

  • The Food and Drug department joined the probe and made a detailed Panchnama of the impounded vials and car.

This case draws attention to the increasing trend of using performance-enhancing drugs among young bodybuilding enthusiasts and the demand for stricter rules and their enforcement to check this illegal trade.
