In a shocking case, Hyderabad police arrested two people for their role in the death of a 17-year-old youth who died of complications after administering a potent painkiller, CP-DOL-100, reportedly sold over-the-counter. The incident has raised serious doubts regarding the free sale of high-strength drugs to minors.
Key Highlights
Boy Injected CP-DOL-100 Without Any Medical Supervision
The victim, 17 years old, dissolved CP-DOL-100 tablets in saline and injected it.
He became critically ill on April 17 and died on April 19 after he was shifted to Osmania General Hospital.
Accused Allegedly Provided Drugs to Young People for Free
Syed Sahil (21) and Srinivasa Medical Shop owner Praveen Kumar (54) were identified as the accused by the police.
According to reports, Sahil provided the drug for free to young people and urged misuse before charging for it.
Painkiller Sold Without Prescription
Praveen Kumar sold CP-DOL-100 to Sahil without checking a doctor's prescription, defying drug safety laws.
The police confiscated several strips of the painkiller, used syringes, saline bottles, and cell phones.
Family's Complaint Triggered Legal Action
Victim's father, Mohammed Abdul Qayyum, who is working in Dubai, lodged a complaint upon being told by his wife.
He traveled to India in a rush, only to hear about his son's death upon his arrival.
This pathetic case has again raised alarm over the risks of uncontrolled sale of drugs and the simplicity with which children can get access to powerful prescription drugs. The authorities have filed a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Juvenile Justice Act. Further investigations are being carried out to break the larger network that facilitates such exploitation.
