It is in a major statement during a session in the Lok Sabha, when Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda said that the HPV vaccine is of extreme importance in order to prevent cervical cancer; however, it has yet to be added to the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). The government has initiated a population-based programme against cervical cancer and other non-communicable diseases under the aegis of NHM.
Importance of Screening and Prevention:
Under the NP-NCD, an initiative has been started. Under this, objectives are made for the availability of strong health infrastructure and training of health personnel to identify high-risk cervical cancer along with mass cervical cancer screenings. Risk assessments and provision of support for such at-risk people in seeking medical screening and treatment at health facilities lie within the role of ASHAs and ANMs.The Community-Based Assessment Checklist is used to screen people aged 30 and older for NCD risks, which include cervical cancer. Findings are entered in the National NCD Portal, which enables early diagnosis and continuity of care for common NCDs.
Punjab Leads Awareness Efforts:
Punjab has emerged as cervical cancer awareness and screening leader. From January to December 2024, it has screened approximately 3.99 lakh women of above 30 years of age for cervical cancer in the state. The mass awareness campaign held was conducted in Amritsar and rural areas with organized camps on early detection and healthy lifestyle.
On November 17, 2024, Cervical Cancer Elimination Day was celebrated in the district by conducting poster competitions, IEC material distribution, and screening camps at the district level as part of National Cancer Awareness Day, which is annually celebrated in all 23 districts by organizing cycle rallies, FM radio messages, and SMS campaigns.
A Community-Centric Approach:
ASHAs form the core of these initiatives, as they educate the community to lead healthier lifestyles and recognize early signs of cancer. Other platforms such as VHSNC, MAS, and SHGs also facilitate these initiatives, thus taking the initiative to a more grassroots level. The Way Forward While the introduction of the HPV vaccine into the UIP is still a pending wish, the focus of community-level awareness and screening work by the government continues strengthening India's fight against cervical cancer. The initiatives, taking advantage of health infrastructure, digital tools, and trained persons, are directed toward early detection, enhanced management of the disease, and improved lives for millions of women.
