Surgical Oncologist Dr. Vishal Rao dispelled all the misconceptions related to Human Metapneumovirus, stating that HMPV does not spread like COVID-19. In light of respiratory diseases, India is on its toes, and health experts are demanding precautionary measures to control the virus.

Important Highlights

  1. HMPV Transmissions vs. COVID-19:

  2. HMPV is a droplet-based infection. Though it propagates mainly through coughing, COVID-19 spreads through verbal transmission and by breathing.

  3. Quotes Dr. Rao of Bengaluru's HCG Hospital, "HMPV is not airborne like COVID-19; it's transmitted via respiratory droplets.

  2.  Immunity from Vaccination:
Though no vaccine is developed for HMPV yet, people who got flu shots and three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are immune to this virus, Dr. Rao added.

HMPV Cases in India
Till date, there are three confirmed cases of HMPV reported in India:

  • A two-month-old boy in Ahmedabad.

  • Two infants in Bengaluru, who are recovering from the infection.

Expert Advice and Government Action:
Preventive Measures Suggested by Experts:

  • Wearing masks in crowded places.

  • Maintaining proper hand hygiene.

  • Avoiding people suffering from respiratory disorders

Government Preparedness:

  • NCDC has been monitoring the spread of respiratory diseases in winter. The Union Health Ministry keeps regular contact with health agencies worldwide, including WHO.

  • Recently, there was a national mock drill to assess India's preparedness if a spurt of respiratory diseases hits the country.

Even though HMPV does not represent a level of risk like that of COVID-19, traditional precautions, for example, masks, and hygiene behaviors can significantly suppress its spread. The Indian government, along with health agencies, is keenly monitoring the situation and ensuring readiness for any possible rise in cases.
