Five women aged between 20-25 developed delirium following C-section delivery at Government Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The anaesthesia drug 'Bupivacaine' is suspected to have caused an adverse reaction, and the government has ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident.
Key Highlights:
Women Experienced Memory Loss and Delirium Following Surgery
The women infected with the waterborne disease delivered their babies by C-section on Thursday and soon showed symptoms of delirium and memory loss.
The physicians sent them immediately to the ICU to avoid more complications like pre-coma or coma.
Response of Hospital and Investigation On
Four of the five women are now shifted to the general ward, while the fifth woman continues to be monitored at the ICU.
Hospital authorities have suspended temporarily the use of 'Bupivacaine', an anaesthesia medication utilized for spinal anaesthesia in C-sections.
The drug samples have been forwarded to Kolkata for pharmacovigilance analysis to check if it led to the reaction.
Official Statement from Hospital Superintendent
Dr. Rahul Mishra, Government Gandhi Memorial Hospital Superintendent, said:
"Efforts are underway to determine why these women experienced memory loss. The drugs given to them during the Caesarean operation, as well as the anaesthesia dosage, are under the scanner."
Current Condition of the Patients
All five women are in better shape now, and a panel of experts is keeping a close watch on their recovery.
The Rewa district administration and the health officials are probing the drug reaction. Official pharmacovigilance reports from Kolkata would be awaited before any conclusions would be drawn, authorities said. The case is also attracting special attention because Rewa is home to Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who holds the health portfolio as well.
