In a shocking case of impersonation and fraud, a man posing as a drug inspector duped a local clinic operator in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, out of ₹7.5 lakhs. The accused, who has a history of similar crimes across multiple states, was arrested at Bagbahara Railway Station.
The Fraud Unfolded
The incident occurred on November 11, 2024, when the accused, identifying himself as a drug inspector, visited Shriram Care Clinic, operated by Sheshnarayan Gupta. Using intimidation and deception, he extracted ₹7.5 lakhs from Gupta.
Criminal History
Police investigations revealed that the accused, Smith Sethi (40), hails from Odisha and has been involved in several cases of fraud:
Past Offenses: A year ago, he impersonated a CID officer in Mungeli district to carry out similar fraudulent activities.
Other Locations: He has criminal cases registered against him in Kantabanji and Titlagarh, Odisha.
Swift Police Action
After the victim filed an FIR at the City Kotwali, the police activated their informant network and reviewed CCTV footage to track the suspect. An informant spotted a man resembling the suspect sitting at Bagbahara Railway Station. Acting promptly, the police detained Sethi and conducted a thorough interrogation.
Confession and Arrest
Initially, Sethi tried to mislead the authorities but eventually confessed to his crimes under strict questioning. He was arrested under sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Indian Penal Code and has been sent to judicial custody.
