In a major crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical exports, Mumbai Customs officials arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to export banned psychotropic drugs to the United Kingdom. Over 1.5 lakh tablets, including Tramadol and Alprazolam, were seized during raids in Virar and at the Mumbai International Courier Terminal.
Key Highlights
Illegal Pharma Shipment Busted at Airport
Customs intercepted a parcel at the International Courier Terminal falsely declared as multivitamin and multimineral tablets.
Inside, they discovered 1,227 strips of Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets (Treken-100), each containing 10 tablets.
Massive Drug Seizure During Follow-Up Raids
Raids on premises of accused in Virar led to seizure of 1.5 lakh+ tablets, including:
Tramadol, Alprazolam (multiple brands), Diazepam (Dispam-10), Zolpidem (Zoltrate-10), Nitrazepam
11,270 Tramadol tablets and thousands of other psychotropic substances were recovered.
Accused Linked to UK-Based Buyer
The arrested include P. Kumar (Rajasthan) and U. Kumar (Virar).
U. Kumar admitted to exporting similar banned consignments earlier to the UK with a buyer named Imran.
NDPS Act Violations Confirmed
The drugs fall under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Export documents were forged to mislabel contents as dietary supplements.
Statements from Officials or Leaders
A Customs official said:
“In his statement, P. Kumar claimed ignorance about the parcel contents. However, U. Kumar admitted he knowingly packed and exported banned psychotropic drugs, and had done so in the past as well.”The Customs Department is expected to take further legal action under the NDPS Act and Foreign Trade regulations. Investigations are ongoing to identify the international drug trafficking network and other accomplices.
