The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) has developed an innovative technology to convert pathogenic biomedical waste into soil additives, offering a safe, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional incineration methods. The automated biomedical waste conversion rig, named “S?janam”, will be formally launched by Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, at AIIMS, New Delhi on February 10.

Key Highlights:
Launch of S?janam Biomedical Waste Conversion Rig:

  • The prototype equipment has a daily capacity of 400 kg and can handle 10 kg of degradable medical waste per day during the initial phase.

  • It can disinfect pathogenic waste such as blood, urine, sputum, and laboratory disposables without the need for energy-intensive incinerators.

  • The technology neutralizes foul odors and imparts a pleasant fragrance to the treated waste.

Environmental and Safety Benefits:

  • The treated biomedical waste has been confirmed to have antimicrobial properties and is non-toxic.

  • Soil studies show that the converted waste is superior to traditional fertilizers like vermicompost.

  • The system minimizes human intervention, reducing the risk of occupational exposure and uncontrolled spread of infectious microbes.
