The Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) recently took strict action against Ayurvedic doctors found prescribing allopathic medicines, including high-dose antibiotics, to pregnant women. This came to light during inspections in areas like Champapet, Karmanghat, and Saidabad in Hyderabad. What Happened?

  • A team from TGMC, led by Dr. Srinivas (Vice Chairman), Dr. Imran Ali, and Dr. Rajiv, inspected 20 clinics. During the checks, cases were registered against 10 fake doctors.

  • One Ayurvedic doctor was caught conducting tests on a pregnant woman and prescribing allopathic medicines, which included antibiotics and steroids.

  • Two other Ayurvedic doctors, Dr. Ramesh and Dr. Veeresh, were also found giving similar medicines against the rules.

Strict Measures Ahead

  • TGMC has decided to file complaints with the District Health and Medical Officer.

  • Offenders could face ₹5 lakh fines and up to one year in jail for breaking medical rules.

  • Dr. Imran Ali revealed that 350 FIRs have already been filed across Telangana against private medical practitioners (PMPs) involved in similar illegal activities.

Why This Matters to Pharmacists

  1. Double-Check Prescriptions: Pregnant women are at risk. Pharmacists must carefully review prescriptions to ensure they’re appropriate and safe.

  2. Be the Gatekeeper: Keep an eye out for suspicious or unsafe prescriptions and guide customers towards safe options.

  3. Spread Awareness: Educate your customers about the importance of consulting qualified doctors instead of relying on shortcuts or unlicensed practitioners.

A Big Reminder for All
This incident is a wake-up call about the misuse of antibiotics and steroids, especially for pregnant women. Pharmacists play a key role in protecting their customers by ensuring medicines are used responsibly and only when prescribed by qualified professionals.
