In a shocking incident, an Ayurvedic doctor in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, was swindled out of ₹7.5 lakh by a fraudster impersonating a drug officer. The audacious act occurred in broad daylight on Monday morning, leaving the local medical community on edge.
How It Happened
Dr. Sheshnarayan Gupta, based in Kumhar Para, was attending to a patient at his clinic when the imposter arrived in a black coat, claiming first to be an income tax officer. The fraudster, accompanied by another man in a Swift car, interrogated Dr. Gupta about his income and profile details.
When presented with all the required documents, the man changed his story, claiming to be a drug officer. He even flashed a fake ID card to bolster his claim. Pretending to inspect the clinic, the fraudster searched for allopathic medicines. Although none were found, he started threatening the doctor, demanding documents related to his clinic and degree.
The intimidation led Dr. Gupta to part with ₹7.5 lakh in a desperate bid to avoid trouble. The conman then fled the scene, leaving the doctor shaken and distraught.
Swift Police Action
After recovering from the ordeal, Dr. Gupta lodged a complaint at the City Kotwali police station. Acting on his report, Inspector Sharad Dubey and his team launched an investigation.
Using CCTV footage from a nearby shop, police identified the car used by the conman, tracing its number with help from the cyber cell. The vehicle’s driver was apprehended on Tuesday in Khariar Road. Preliminary investigations reveal the car had been rented from Raipur.
Investigation Ongoing
While the driver is being interrogated, efforts are underway to locate the main accused. The police are also reviewing the CCTV footage to track the fraudster’s movements and gather more evidence.
Public Alert
This incident serves as a warning for healthcare professionals and the public to verify the credentials of individuals claiming to be officials. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activity immediately.
