In a swift action against drug abuse, the Anupgarh police confiscated 1,780 narcotic pills, including Pregabalin and Tramadol, from a local man near Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk during a patrol on Saturday. The drugs, banned for open sale by the district collector, were allegedly intended for laborers at brick kilns.
Arrest and Confession
The accused, Sanjay Kumar alias Bittu (33), a resident of Ward No. 16 in Anupgarh, was arrested on the spot. Upon interrogation, he admitted to purchasing the pills from an unidentified individual at a low price and consuming some himself. He had hidden the remaining pills near a BSF culvert before attempting to sell them in the market.
How It Unfolded
Suspicious Behavior: Police officers on patrol near Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk noticed Sanjay acting nervously upon seeing their vehicle.
Search and Seizure: Upon searching his bag, officers found the restricted narcotics.
Immediate Action: Head Constable Vinod Kumar and his team seized the pills and detained the suspect for further questioning.
Official Statement
SHO Anil Kumar confirmed that the district collector had banned the sale of these narcotic pills on September 20, 2024. “This swift action underscores our commitment to eradicating drug misuse. Legal proceedings against the accused are underway,” he stated.
Why This Matters
Crackdown on Drug Abuse: With increasing reports of drug misuse, such actions aim to curb the availability of narcotics in vulnerable communities.
Community Impact: Laborers and low-income groups often fall prey to drug addiction, making this seizure a significant step toward protecting such groups.
