In a major operation against drug trafficking, the Kaliachak Police in Malda seized 2,400 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup, a controlled substance often smuggled for misuse. The police conducted two successful raids on November 2 and 3, during routine checks and targeted searches.
The first bust occurred on the Balidanga-Mozampur road, where officers confiscated 1,800 bottles of Phensedyl hidden in a Scorpio vehicle. The driver managed to escape, and preliminary investigations suggest that the individuals involved were attempting to transport the banned syrup across the India-Bangladesh border. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
On November 3, another 600 bottles of Phensedyl were seized from Md. Samim Momin, a resident of Purba Chandpur, who was found with the cough syrup in Nandahari fields. Momin confessed to procuring the syrup from Jharkhand and intending to smuggle it into Bangladesh. Police have filed a second case under the NDPS Act, with both cases now pending in court.
Police remain vigilant in their efforts to curb smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border, focusing on disrupting networks that misuse controlled substances.
