Dr. Premnath Shenoy, former president of the IPA Karnataka branch and current quality and compliance advisor, has called for the launch of a nationwide pharmacy movement to achieve the vision of Viksit Pharmacy@2030, mirroring the broader national development vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
Key HighlightsVision of Viksit Pharmacy@2030
Dr. Shenoy emphasised the need to evolve the role of pharmacists from medicine dispensers to medication therapy counsellors.
Proposed taskforce comprising leaders from professional pharmacy and healthcare associations to chart a roadmap.
Key stakeholders to be involved: Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Health, Pharmacy Council of India, Indian Medical Association, and the National Medical Commission.
Need for Regulatory and Curriculum Reform
Advocated for policy reforms and regulatory changes through collaboration with state and central agencies.
PCI should introduce a foundation year for pharmacy practice training for graduates and postgraduates.
Pharm D holders may be licensed to practice upon completion of degree without additional training.
International Models and Proposed Changes
Suggested drawing inspiration from UK and Australia for integrating pharmacists into general practice.
Proposed the inclusion of pharmacists in general medical settings to advise patients on advanced medication protocols:
Transdermal patches
Inhalers (pulmonary route)
Buccal absorption
Implantable sustained-release devices
Rationale for the Movement
Chronic disease burden, ageing population, and healthcare costs call for greater pharmacist involvement.
Pharmacy integration would strengthen patient care through improved medication literacy and adherence.
Mandatory pharmacy practice can boost professional self-esteem and career opportunities for pharmacy graduates.
Statements from Leaders or Officials

– Dr. Premnath Shenoy, Quality & Compliance Advisor, Former President IPA KarnatakaDr. Shenoy’s proposal envisions a bold shift in India's healthcare landscape, advocating for the creation of a taskforce, structural reforms in education, and deeper policy collaboration. With pharmacists playing an increasingly vital role in chronic care management and therapeutic guidance, the push for Viksit Pharmacy@2030 could redefine the future of pharmacy practice in India.
