World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June in order to engage the governments, businesses, and citizens to divert their attention to the various environmental issues and come up with pressing actions. The theme for the year 2024 is Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration Through a number of recent events like the bushfires in Brazil, to locust infestations across East Africa and India — and now, a global disease pandemic — we can see how deeply dependent we are to the various webs of life and how important it is to conserve them. One of the prime reasons for this disruption in our biodiversity is climate change. Many species struggle to adapt and survive in regions that have been altered due to this change. Here are a few ways in which you can take a step towards conserving the biodiversity and bending the curve of climate change in our favor -
Education
Education about the various environmental issues and the role we play as stakeholders in the various factions of life is one of the first and most vital keys to success. In modern contemporary society, there are a number of platforms for us to utilize that can allow us to spread our message easily. By educating others about climate change and how they can act against it, you can help protect the planet.
Purchase sustainable products
The massive consumption of natural resources by us is one of the main reasons for biodiversity loss and hence it’s our responsibility to consume products that are produced in the most sustainable way. Many projects are now labeled with ecolabels that state if they are environmentally friendly and when we consume these goods it increases the demand for environmentally conscious products pushing more producers to make them.
Make Your Commute Green
We all saw the drastic change in the pollution levels of various cities when we all went under lockdown in this pandemic. Millions of cars emit greenhouse gases that destroy our atmosphere and these emissions are a close second when it comes to the top causes of climate change. There are various options that you can utilize to make your commute to work eco-friendly. Taking public transportation, using bicycles, or car-pooling are some of them. Some cities in the world have already taken steps towards such sustainable transportation infrastructure so as to reduce their carbon footprint.
Be More Conservative with Energy Usage
Conservative usage of energy is a great way to prevent pollution. Energy is produced by huge power plants that emit greenhouse gases in the process. This means that you should do what you can to cut down on energy usage in your household so as to regulate these emissions and in turn save the planet.
