“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.”

Our body works like a machine. This machine is fueled by vitamins, nutrients, and minerals it takes in from the environment and the food we consume. However, there are times when toxins accumulate in the body through three sources, i.e. our digestive tract, environment, and cellular waste products. This often leads to bloating and gas in the body which is uncomfortable and calls for a detox!

Why detoxification?

  • Our body is mechanized to detox itself, however, with the increasing toxicity in the environment and the food, it is difficult for the organs to detoxify alone. This leads to blockages in the intestinal tract which aids a lot of sicknesses like constipation, gas, and bloating.

  • The process helps drain out all the toxins in the body that are capable of aiding the development of diseases.

  • Clears any blockage in the body leading it to work smoothly without any hindrances.

Detoxifying helps in the following ways:

  1. It sets you up for healthy habits.

  2. It can make you feel better inside out.

  3. It can kill your unhealthy cravings.

  4. It helps in balancing your hormones.

  5. It smoothes your digestion.

What happens when you detoxify?

The main organs that critically have to undergo detoxification are the gut, liver, and kidneys. Our bowels and urinary tract are also important because they help excrete toxins through our bile and urine. The liver is the primary filtration system. It works day after day to cleanse our blood, excrete waste and metabolize nutrients. It also helps us store vitamins, support immune function, produce proteins and remove dietary and environmental threats to avoid toxic accumulation. The kidneys are important too as they help regulate proper mineral balance, support hormone excretion, flush out urinary bacteria, and maintain a healthy pH.

However, there are times when the body cannot perform the detox by itself. In a physical detox, the body undergoes the same process but with more enhancement.

  • Detox diets, detox routines, or massages help mobilize and eliminate toxins from the body by mobilizing the lymphatic system.

  • Together, they can greatly enhance the ability of the lymphatic, cardiopulmonary, and hepatorenal circulatory systems to eliminate toxins.

  • Other forms of bodywork such as acupuncture may be helpful as well.

Simple ways to detox your body naturally

Think fiber: Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables to flush out the toxins. Which are those high-fiber foods? Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed.

Get your C: Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins. Add oranges, peppers, and broccoli to your diet.

Drink more water: Keep your cells hydrated and healthy by drinking at least 2 liters of water daily.

Focus on deep breaths: Breathing deeply gets more oxygen to circulate throughout your system.

Head for your favorite physical activity: Sweating it out in a sauna may help your body get rid of some toxins via perspiration.

This article curates the necessity, benefits, and ways you can healthily detox your body that in turn supports why it is necessary to detox your body. Along with your body, the mind too. It is indeed a wonderful process that has tons of benefits.
