Every year on the 21st of May Anti-terrorism day is observed to impart knowledge to the youth about terrorism and its impact on humans. This day is also observed to spread awareness among people about the anti-social act of terrorism.

These terrorists kill thousands of people without any repentance just to create fear in the minds of the common people. This can influence youth adversely. Therefore it becomes pivotal to propagate the message of humanity and peace. To highlight the importance of fighting against terrorism, the Indian government had taken a step to celebrate Anti-terrorism day every year.

Why is it celebrated on 21st May?

Officially the national anti-terrorism day was announced after the assassination of India’s seventh Prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi on 21st May 1991. He was in a campaign in Tamil Nadu, when he was killed by the terrorists.

Under the then government of VP Singh, the center had decided to observe 21st May as an anti-terrorism day. Since then it is being celebrated in the country. Also, the anti-terrorism pledge is taken on this day by all government offices and other public institutions.

Objectives -

  • To spread the message of peace, humanity, and unity among people.

  • To make everyone aware of violence and its dangerous effects on the people, society, and the whole country.

  • Also, to educate and train youngsters by preventing them from joining any terrorist groups.

How it is celebrated-

  • By organizing debates or discussions in schools, colleges, and universities on the danger of terrorism and violence.

  • To highlight the ill effects of terrorism and its aftermath, mass education programs are held.

  • Rallies and parades are organized by central and state governments to propagate the effects of terrorism.

  • Special marches and people’s gatherings are held to pay respect to former Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Humanity can’t forget the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks and 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Terrorism is an act that causes loss of life and fear of death among people. Therefore this National Anti-terrorism day let us join and eliminate terror by spreading love, care, and humanity amongst people while showing solidarity against terrorism.
