The covid-19 was a prolonged stressful period for every individual. However, in recent times the fight against it has intensified and has seen a silver lining with the introduction of the vaccine. A sigh of relief has been established as many people have started to get vaccinated.

Getting the vaccine is essential as it keeps your immune system protected from the virus. Furthermore, they also make the infection less severe if you contract the virus after vaccination.

Undoubtedly, the vaccination process is understandable, however, there are certain guidelines that one should follow and know about. These are a few crucial tips for you as you await your vaccine.

Eligibility for the vaccine

As per the current status of the vaccination in India, any individual above the age of 18 can get vaccinated.

Care before the vaccine

Once you have registered yourself on the app and receive a date for your appointment, follow the tips mentioned below:

  • Do not take the vaccine on an empty stomach. Eat well as you go for your vaccine dose. Include leafy vegetables, food rich in antioxidants that help boost immunity.

  • Do not overeat or eat junk food.

  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

  • Get good sleep at night. The role of a good night’s sleep in boosting immunity is scientifically proven.

  • If you regularly take over-the-counter aspirin or pain killers, you may continue. However, if you want to avoid side effects from the vaccine, do not take these medicines before taking the vaccine.

  • Avoid excess alcohol intake as it may dehydrate you.

  • Be prepared to take any vaccine available at the center at the given time. Remember, all vaccines have been proven safe and effective.

  • Cancel your appointment if you notice any Covid-like symptoms. You can rebook after 14 days of experiencing such symptoms. Talk to your doctor about this.

Care after the vaccine

  • After vaccination, stay seated at the vaccination center for 15–30 minutes. Health workers will monitor you for immediate reactions.

  • Report if you feel dizzy or have nausea, vomiting, or any allergic reaction.

  • Drink plenty of fluids and keep your body hydrated after the vaccine dose.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol or smoking.

  • Soothe your arm. You may place a cool or wet washcloth on the area.

  • Swing your vaccinated arm mildly to calm the inflammation.

  • Be prepared for some minor side effects as your body builds immune protection.

General side effects noted are:

  • Chills and mild fever.

  • Headache.

  • Fatigue and body ache.

  • Joint and muscle pain.

  • Pain and redness at the site of injection.

General tips

  • Think it out and then schedule your appointment to stick to it. Missing your appointment could result in a wasted dose of the vaccine.

  • Wear comfortable clothing that makes it easy for the officials to access your arm.

  • Reschedule if you have known exposure or symptoms.

  • Carry the ID you used for registration. Visit the center wearing a mask and maintain physical distance. Note the type of vaccine you received to book the second dose.

  • Download your vaccination certificate, mark your calendar for the second dose of the vaccine, and schedule an appointment.

The vaccine is just like any other injection prick and tries to calm yourself before and while getting vaccinated. Although you have received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, remember to take preventive measures.

Remember that vaccination does not ensure complete immunity. So continue wearing masks and follow safe hygiene practices for self-protection and prevent virus transmission. Take both doses according to the schedule and encourage other people to get vaccinated.

Stay safe, stay strong!
