Following reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in different parts of the country, the health department has sounded an alarm by increasing vigilance over ILI and SARI cases in Nashik district. Health officers have been told to be extra alert and start preparing for such an eventuality.

Key Points
Surveillance Measures:
Divisional health officer Kapil Aher asked the health officers of Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, and Ahmednagar districts to monitor areas that report higher cases of ILI and SARI cases closely. When there is a surge, health and Asha workers will collect samples for examination at the National Institute of Virology, Pune.

Healthcare Preparedness:
Additional beds have been provided in isolation wards at rural and district hospitals across the Nashik region. Nashik Civil Hospital has also kept extra isolation beds on standby to handle emergencies linked to HMPV.

No Cause for Alarm:
Aher emphasized that there is no reason to panic, as the virus has existed for over two decades without significant mutation. The department's current focus is on maintaining vigilance to identify and contain any potential outbreaks.

Statements from Officials:
According to divisional health officer Kapil Aher, "Things are very much in control in north Maharashtra. This is a precautionary measure, not an emergency. The virus does not mutate significantly, so we are ensuring readiness rather than reacting to a crisis."

Preventive Measures and Surveillance
The health and Asha workers have been asked to carry out their normal work, including checking patients suffering from flu-like symptoms and getting samples where applicable. The health department is coordinating closely with NIV Pune to facilitate proper testing in a timely manner. The Nashik region is prepared to face any surge in ILI or SARI cases with adequate facilities and trained personnel. Although there is no immediate concern, the authorities are still keen on ensuring public health through early detection and prompt action.
